Protecting the legacy was the guiding idea for the partial refurbishment and fire protection works at the Ludwig Richter School in Frankfurt Eschersheim, designed by Martin Elsäesser and Wilhelm Schütte 1928 and extended in the 1950s.

The Local Authority Estates Department in consultation with Ian Shaw Architects decided to install fire-proof glazing over 2 floors in the extension stairwell.

This avoided having to build 2 completely new staircases, thereby preserving the historical ensemble character.

These new glass walls also serve as a "learning tool" for the pupils.

Professor Sabine Zimmermann of the University of Darmstadt, collaborating with the Senckenberg Natural History Museum in Frankfurt, has created graphics of animals and plants using modern digital printing techniques.

In addition, Shaw Architects has refurbished the staircase over its 4-floor entirety.
